The death of a loved one can be the most heartbreaking moment in your life. Jo was overwhelmed with emotion in losing both parents, one about a year after losing the first parent. Amid all the family, friends and neighbors, constant calls and visits, preparations, etc., you become numb with all the distractions. Then…in a quiet moment alone, the gravity of the loss hits you. The realization, the emptiness. You feel lost, not knowing what to do or where to go. Your soul is seeking comfort, like an embrace that never ends, to hold you together. I remember those feelings after losing my parents at a young age. Though you never forget, time will allow for healing and a new sense of peace to fill the empty space.
The loss of parents can leave a deep ache that words cannot fully describe. Grief changes the way we see familiar places, special days, and even ordinary routines. That first birthday or Thanksgiving dinner. You know that they will never be the same. John writes in chapter 14:27, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” Jesus offers a peace that is different from anything the world can provide. His peace does not deny the pain of loss, but it meets us in the middle of it with the assurance that we are not alone, forgotten, or without comfort.
Overcoming grief does not mean rushing past sorrow; it means allowing Christ’s peace to steady your heart one day at a time. Bring your memories, questions, and tears to Him honestly. Focus on Jesus and let His presence quiet fear and help you take the next faithful step. The peace Jesus gives can hold you when your heart feels fragile and remind you that love, hope, and God’s care remain even after great loss.
Prayer: Jesus, comfort my heart in every place touched by grief. Let Your peace quiet my fears and remind me that I am never alone. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
