Being a caretaker

02-27-2019 - John Scott | Philippians 2:1-11

Every family has a “caretaker,” right? Is that you in your family? The one who is always doing for others. I know that I have been guilty of wearing that title more times that I can count. That is who we are. We are the protectors, the organizers and the ones who are always running errands or cleaning up. We carry both the physical and emotional load for the family. Does any of that sound familiar?

Karen is known as her family caretaker. She has a heart of gold. Whether it’s caring for her children or looking over her mother, she always makes sure that her family is taken care of. She always looks to put her family first!

Sometimes the challenge with being the caretaker is that we may find ourselves facing fatigue, stress and burnout. We constantly put others before ourselves. We sacrifice. Although we want to do our best for others, we must be honest with ourselves and our limits. It is easy for frustration, exhaustion and disappointment to overtake our genuine intentions.

Don’t be discouraged. Hebrews 6:10-12 reminds us that “God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, so that what you hope for may be fully realized. We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.”

Accept God’s gift of being the caretaker in your family. He has chosen wisely in giving us the responsibility to serve Him through caring for our loved ones. He knows what we need and will always provide. The prophet Isaiah shared “I took you from the ends of the earth, from its farthest corners I called you. I said, ‘You are my servant’; I have chosen you and have not rejected you. So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (41:9-10 NIV)

God Bless You!
