04-23-2025 - John Scott | Proverbs 1:5

Did you take a course in high school called “Driver’s Education” or Driver’s Ed? It was a class where the instructor taught the basics of vehicle maneuvering, laws, signs, and etiquette. The foundation included traffic laws and road signs, defensive driving techniques, proper vehicle positioning, checking blind spots, maintaining a safe distance, and adapting to different road conditions. What I learned, somewhat the hard way, was attentiveness! Driver distraction can be dangerous to the driver, passengers and other drivers. The great lesson was that driving was a privilege; one to be respected with the highest level of humility.

A group of us, traveling in several cars, were headed back to college in PA from a summer conference in Chicago; yes, it was a long ride!! It turned into a scary experience when my fraternity brother lost control of his car because he was “distracted” while playing with the car stereo. An emergency room visit, some panic amongst the group and a few bumps and bruises taught us all a terribly valuable lesson.

We read in Proverbs, “let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance.” Proverbs? ?1?:?5? ?NIV??. All those driving classes and practicing in the empty parking lot was for more than just the physical skills. Humility taught me that awareness and respect, for the vehicle and for the people on the roads, was a tremendous responsibility. As with most things in life, when we Focus on Jesus, wisdom will lead us to good, responsible choices. Lesson learned!

Peace & Blessings!
