J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis, two of the great literary minds, had a remarkable friendship for almost 40 years, starting in 1926. A relationship, some may not be aware of, began as colleagues as professors at Merton College where they had many disagreements surrounding the Oxford English curriculum. As time went on, the relationship between Tolkien and Lewis began to flourish. So much so, that Tolkien is credited with discussing his faith with Lewis and converting Lewis from being an atheist to Christianity.
I’m sure, like a lot of you, friendships are vitally important to me. Those friendships, especially and fortunately, those that I have cherished for many years, have been a foundation to me and my growth and development. One of the friends I admire the most was in-fact a church mentor during my youth. Over 40 years later, he has been a friend, father-figure, mentor, confidant and spiritual advisor. To me, he has been the epitome of what Paul wrote in Romans where it states, “Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves” (Romans 12:10).
As Christ in his daily walk with His disciples, He was truly devoted to them and loved them. His example of honoring others above oneself was the most selfless act; giving His life on the cross. When we Focus on Jesus in our relationships, we will love others, be devoted to others and hold our friendships in the highest regard.
