10-23-2024 - John Scott | John 15:12

Do you know a couple that has been married for 40, 50, or 60 years? For many of us, it is remarkable. The combination of marriage at a young age and the blessing of living long enough to enjoy a relationship for so many years is rightfully incredible. One of those couples was actor James Garner and Lois Clarke, married for 58 years, from 1956 until Garner`s death in 2016. Of their marriage, Garner said: "Marriage is like the Army; everyone complains, but you`d be surprised at the large number of people who re-enlist."

With Mr. Garner’s quip about marriage, it is an amazing blessing to have the love and life to be married for such a long time. When you think of long-term relationships, what is or has been one of the most asked questions? “How did you stay married so long?” I believe the idea of reciprocity is a key component to marriage; or any quality relationship. In the book of John, he writes, “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you” -John 15:12. If you have a foundation where you love each other, each person gives to the other and helps the other, that is reciprocity.

Focus on Jesus ~ in your marriage and all your relationships. When we follow Jesus and live by His commands, we show love and share love because our words matter, and our actions matter. Love is a choice; it is an action. Christ lived to show love, the love of the Heavenly Father, to all who would receive it. Let us be encouraged to follow Christ’s example of love to each other.

God Bless!
