For the military, the Medal of Honor, was created during the American Civil War and is the highest military decoration presented by the United States government to a member of its armed forces.
Did you know there is only one U. S. President to receive the Medal of Honor? Our 26th President, Theodore Roosevelt! Roosevelt`s Medal of Honor recognized his conduct in frontline fighting in Cuba in 1898. According to the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, the words of Roosevelt`s citation explain: “Lieutenant Colonel Theodore Roosevelt distinguished himself by acts of bravery on 1 July 1898, near Santiago de Cuba, Republic of Cuba, while leading a daring charge up San Juan Hill.”
That is the devotion and commitment that, then Lt. Col. Roosevelt and later President Roosevelt, made along with so many others who received the Medal of Honor. These recipients displayed the greatest honor towards their fellow soldiers. Paul, addressing those principles, wrote in the book of Romans, “Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.” ~Romans? ?12?:?10? ?NIV??
Let us focus on Jesus as we honor others. Our Savior Christ committed the ultimate sacrifice of honor by giving His life for the world. John stated the greatest act of honor when he wrote the words of Christ who said, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John? ?15?:?13? ?NIV?). He gave us the ultimate example!
